In the face of Java 5 Annotations, isn't XDoclet doomed? In a word, no. While J5 annotations are a great thing, the framework lacks in several respects. But eventually, they will catch up, and at the same time, your investment in XDoclet2 plugin tags will be preserved as the plugins are ported to the APT format. I'm an XDoclet user, why should I change over to XDoclet2? Writing a plugin for XDoclet is so easy that anyone can do it very quickly, check the plugin into your own project, and have the advantages of generation without the headaches of generating from a non-standard framework. XDoclet2 uses Generama, which has numerous metadata sources, including generation directly from UML. Your options have never been greater. If I compare the plugin selection between the original XDoclet and XDoclet2, there aren't as many. Why switch? Early versions of XDoclet2 were difficult to get set up and work with, and was not very robust. The plugin support was far from complete, and many of us on the X2 team stuck with X1 for many months in light of this. But as evidenced from people coming across, those days are long since gone, and because plugins are so easy to write, and any X2 developer would be happy to get your plugin started for you. I've realized how easy this generation thing is with X2 and would like to contribute a plugin. Will you accept it? Definitely. We are currently looking for submissions in all categories, so long as you have adequate documentation to post to the website detailing it's use. |
